After twelve weeks of maternity leave, I'm back and starting a new tutoring site
in Mosby Court, one of the public housing projects in Church Hill.
Some of the students at the site will be students who have been in CHAT for a while, but we are also recruiting new families and students that live in Mosby to join us.
I was really nervous about how to go about doing that. I reached out to some families who had been on our waiting list (some for as long as 2 years) and went to meet them and give them information about CHAT and about the new site. But we still wanted to add even more students. Would I just walk around and knock on doors?
Would people trust a stranger who wants their kid to join a new after-school program? Would anyone even take me seriously?
My mentee, Patricia, is in 8th grade and lives in Mosby Court with her family. Over the past two years, I have gotten to know her mom, Kelly, really well. She ended up being the greatest support in helping me get people excited about CHAT’s new location in the community.
Together, we walked around in the pouring rain and she introduced me to a few families that she knew that she thought would be interested in joining CHAT. In the process, we also ended up meeting other people that she had never met before.
We even met a 23 year old mother who had been in CHAT when she was a teen and wants her first grade daughter in our program!
I was so thankful to have Kelly by my side, helping me meet families and recruit students, but really just walking alongside me in this journey of starting something new in this community.
I am reminded of the verse in Isaiah 43:19 that says,
For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.
I am looking forward to seeing the ways that the Lord is going to be creating rivers in a place that some may think is a dry wasteland.
Please be in prayer with me over these next few weeks as we seek to get this new tutoring site started! I am looking for volunteers who can commit one hour a week (from 6:00-7:00 on Mondays or Tuesdays) to come out and tutor some of these new students. If you or someone you know is interested, let me know! Thank you for all of your support and love.
